Pounamu Pounamu (40th anniversary edition) by Witi Ihimaera. This is a book of short stories written by one of New Zealand’s most celebrated Maori writers. First published in 1972, it’s an interesting look at what it means to be a New Zealander, from a Maori perspective. “Pounamu” is the green jade stone that is sacred to Maori people.
Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before by Tony Horwitz. Horwitz becomes a sailor on a replica of the ship that Cook sailed around the South Pacific and visits many of the smaller islands he “discovered” as well as New Zealand and Australia. A fascinating portrait of the famed navigator and his impact on the peoples he encountered.
